A Postpartum doula provides guidance to new parents on important subjects like infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother & baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care. The primary purpose of the Postpartum Doula is to help the mother and the entire family transition into life with a newborn. The role of a Postpartum Doula is one of instructional assistance - teaching and empowering the new mother and family members while lending a hand with some tasks in order to keep them from getting overwhelmed and to ensure a smooth transition for the family.
Help with the emotional and physical recovery after birth.
Assistance with feedings, proper latch, positioning, etc. Preparation and cleaning of bottles and pump supplies as needed.
Assistance with newborn care such as diapering, bathing, feeding and comforting. Demonstration of various baby soothing techniques.
Light snack and meal preparation. Running errands if necessary.
Light housekeeping so that families do not feel so overwhelmed, such as helping with dishes and laundry.
Taking care of your infant overnight so that you can sleep. Development of your infant’s sleep schedule and ensuring he or she is getting proper rest .
Referrals to local resources such as parenting classes, pediatricians, therapists, lactation consultants and support groups.
Helping older siblings to feel included and engaged in welcoming the new baby. Help to incorporate an older child into this new experience.
